About these photos:
Being “no longer young” (as Clementine Churchill said to Winston in the Hallmark Hall of Fame production of The Gathering Storm) has advantages. After all, I’ve seen and heard quite a few things of excellence in my time. One was an old CBS special of Duke Ellington’s life and music, with Tammy Grimes performing Ellington’s “Sophisticated Lady” — a much different composition than the soul song performed by Natalie Cole in 1976. Finding lyrics is no great difficulty any more, and so I had the basis for a sequence of photos (with me as “Maren”) portraying the sad lady of the composition. She finds little joy in the man who is visiting her for the evening, and ends the night smoking and weeping over her loveless life.
The bad thing about Grimes’ performance (available as a video clip) is that it’s hard in the beginning to understand what she’s singing, really; and she’s singing it in the first person, instead of the second person, as it’s normally performed. But I found another performance that is fantastic, and I’ve added its video below.
